Apartment living comes with many benefits including convenience, bonus amenities and onsite maintenance. Many renters are attracted to this low-maintence lifestyle, however, if you're like most renters then you worry about finding a home that will be welcoming to both you and your furry best friend. Luckily, Sacramento is becoming more and more pet-friendly each year. We're seeing a greater number of pet friendly housing opportunities, along with citywide amenites geared towards pet parents, such as dog parks, local pet stores, and pet care and pampering services. Pet-friendly living goes beyond just basic "pet-tolerance," and these homes often include special pet amenities that aren't found in the average complex.
Some common amenities offered in pet-friendly condos, lofts, and apartments include communal dog runs, play areas or easy access to a nearby dog park. Many also allow dogs in certain public spaces within the complex, such as resident lounges and patios. Other on-site pet amenities may include dog washing facilities or even pet-sitting and walking services. Best of all, due to these shared resident amenities, there is often a like-minded community of pet-loving neighbors for you to be a part of. This may be beneficial for both you and your pet’s social life.
According to a recent survey by Apartments.com 90% of renter respondents said that they have a pet. Of course, this survey may not be completely accurate, but it certainly showcases the importance of having more housing options for pet owners. Sadly, the struggle to find appropriate housing leads to renters surrendering millions of pets annually to US shelters. And, finding a pet-friendly apartment can be even more complicated if you have a large or exotic pet. Despite the challenges of being a renter with pets, there are some steps you can take to make the home search process easier and more enjoyable for you and your furry friend. Here are some tips for finding the perfect apartment:
|
1. Start your search early. Pet friendly apartments tend to fill up quickly, so it’s best to start looking at least a month or more before you plan to move. You can use online platforms like Apartments.com or Zillow to filter your search by pet policy...and sometimes even by size, breed, and amenities. Once you narrow down your list of potential properties, then you should visit the property's direct website to get further details about policies and restrictions.
2. Be flexible and realistic. Depending on your location, budget, and preferences, you may have to compromise on some aspects of your ideal apartment. For example, you may have to pay higher rent, an extra security deposit, or even a pet fee. You may also have to settle for a smaller or less convenient unit, even if ground floor units are more ideal. Be prepared to negotiate with landlords and managers and be respectful of their rules and expectations.
3. Explore different neighborhoods. Some areas may be more pet friendly than others, offering more green spaces, parks, trails, and pet services. You can also use online resources like Zumper or Apartment Guide to find out the most pet friendly areas and neighborhoods in the area. You may also opt to visit these places in person and talk to local residents and businesses about their experiences with pets. 4. Prepare a pet resume. That's right...a pet resume! This is a document that showcases your pet’s personality, behavior, health, and training. It can also include references from previous landlords, veterinarians, groomers, or trainers. A pet resume can help you stand out from other applicants and showcase to potential landlords/managers that you're a responsible pet owner, and that your pet is well-behaved and suitable for apartment living. |
5. Be honest and respectful. Don’t try to hide or lie about your pet, as this can lead to eviction, fines, or legal trouble. Always disclose your pet’s information and follow the pet policy of your lease agreement. Respect your neighbors and the property by keeping your pet clean, quiet, and under control. Clean up after your pet and always report any damages or issues caused by your pet to your landlord or manager.
